Area Beaches

There are numerous spots for beachgoers to choose from in the Wilmington, NC region. Since the average summer high in the area is 90 degrees, being situated close to a beach is a major benefit, especially if you enjoy swimming, sunbathing, seafood, sailing and surfing.

Wilmington Area Beaches

Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville Beach

One of the most popular beaches in New Hanover County is Wrightsville Beach. Known for having a small-beach-town charm with a vacation-style atmosphere, the island features resort hotels, vacation rentals, shops and restaurants all within footsteps from the water’s edge. It also plays host to the East Coast’s largest women’s surfing competition, the East Coast Wahine Championship. The Town of Wrightsville Beach also features a notable park with tennis and basketball courts, baseball diamond and playground, all surrounded by a 2-mile walking/biking loop.

Topsail Island

Kure Beach

Topsail Beach and Surf City, located 30 miles north of downtown Wilmington, offers a quiet setting to those who would rather avoid large crowds. This relaxed beach town is Topsail Island's hub of shopping and entertainment. Adjacent to the area are the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, and the Marine Corps Air Station, New River.

Pleasure Island

Carolina Beach

A drive over Snow's Cut Bridge will bring you to Pleasure Island, home of Carolina and Kure Beach. Pleasure Island thrives with miles of sandy beaches, surrounded by a friendly, small-town nature. Take a stroll down the Carolina Beach boardwalk, ride the Fort Fisher Ferry, or charter a boat for fishing and exploring the waterways.

Carolina Beach is located just 15 miles south of Wilmington. Visitors have the choice to vacation at vintage beach motels, cottage rentals, or colorful oceanfront condos. Hospitality has long been a trademark of Carolina Beach. This unique resort community allows a variety of activities including water sports, surf fishing, pier fishing, deep-sea fishing, shopping, dining, miniature golf, and nature hikes at Carolina Beach State Park. Residents pride themselves in keeping the beaches clean and safe. Carolina Beach is home to a boardwalk equipped with arcades, food establishments, and gazebo which hosts live music on the weekends. Its active charter boat basin at the Municipal Marina offers nightly moonlight cruises with dancing and offshore fishing excursions.

Kure Beach, North Carolina is situated a few miles south of Carolina Beach. Guests are welcomed with old-fashioned hospitality and enjoy attractions such as the site of the Battle of Fort Fisher, the Fort Fisher Museum and the North Carolina Aquarium. Kure Beach is mostly residential, dotted with ocean-view motels, condos and cottages. At the small town center, you’ll find the Kure Beach Pier (one of the East Coast’s longest fishing piers), several fresh seafood restaurants, a convenience store and amusements.
