Downtown Wilmington
Downtown Wilmington is situated along the Cape Fear River and offers an historic atmosphere with its mile-long Riverwalk as a main tourist attraction. To this day, visitors are reminded of its rich history by the grand old homes and tree-lined boulevards, making Wilmington one of the most striking, small cities in the south. In fact, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Wilmington, North Carolina one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.
There are many activities available downtown that will spark the interest of both young and old. Hear the old tales of Blackbeard the Pirate and other fascinating tidbits on walking tours like the Ghost Walk or Haunted Pub Crawl. You can also learn about Wilmington’s history at the Cape Fear Museum or Bellamy Mansion. Wilmington offers many shopping opportunities, whether at the quaint shops of the Cotton Exchange, the many antique shops or locally-owned boutiques. Downtown Wilmington has been revitalized and preserved with the help of the Historic Wilmington Foundation, a non-profit group who strives to maintain the integrity of historical architecture, and Wilmington Downtown, a public-private organization which began over 20 years ago with the purpose of coordinating the revitalization of the downtown business district. These organizations involve local government, private businesses, property owners, and residents to remain a vital force in the development of the area.
